Friends of Jenny Creek

Who we are…

Friends of Jenny Creek is a non-profit, community organization created to inform friends and neighbors living in Lower & Upper Sunset in West Redding and the Redding area, of a “proposed trail” City of Redding wants to construct between these residential neighborhoods going through the Jenny Creek Open Space…

Friends of Jenny Creek opposes a proposed trail being constructed inside the Jenny Creek open space.

Friends of Jenny Creek is alternately suggesting the City of Redding redirect their plan by using existing trails already connecting to the Sacramento River Trail. This would allow less expense to the City and provide a mindful preservation to the Jenny Creek Open Space.

What We Have Learned…

As of September/October 2025…

FJC has learned that the City of Redding’s proposed project for constructing a trail through the Jenny Creek open space, is in application with the City of Redding Planning Department for a CEQA Review (California Environmental Quality Act legal requirements) to be completed.

The Planning Department on October 8, 2025, reported to FJC that this process will take “months to review” by the Planning staff. After its review it would then move to a 30-day Public Comment period before the CEQA document is presented to the Planning Commission to determine if it can be permitted.

FJC will keep you apprised as we learn more details to this proposed project

Key Points FJC opposes

for a proposed trail construction

  • The City of Redding (COR) is proposes to construct an 8-16 foot wide, paved, and lighted trail through the Jenny Creek open space through terrain that is very steep and would interfere with the habitat, wildlife and impose public access near residential properties.

  • COR also proposes building one large bridge crossing (possibly 80-ft) over the northern convergent end of Jenny Creek canyon and also three other small precast concrete bridges proposed to be built over ephemeral streams.

  • The proposed northern trail would connect through the steepest area of open space with an 80-foot wide bridge over the creek to meet up with the existing Overhill Drive Trail which already connects to the Sacramento River Trail.

  • Already there are over 215 miles of trails within a 15-mile radius of Redding for biking, walking and hiking to serve our community.

  • Trails that are in place now are not being maintained for lack of City funds.

  • This unneeded trail would add increased and unwanted public access, thereby making the open space, habitat, wildlife and the homes and families surrounding it vulnerable to crime and fire.

  • It is our goal as residents and stewards of our surroundings, to stand for the protection and preservation of Jenny Creek and this natural, healthy habitat, its wildlife and its human inhabitants.
