OUR MISSION…

Friends of Jenny Creek is a non-profit, unincorporated, community organization created to protest against and inform friends and neighbors living in Lower & Upper Sunset in West Redding and the greater Redding area, of a “proposed trail” the City of Redding is planning to build between our residential neighborhoods through the Jenny Creek Greenbelt.

We protest the destruction of the habitat, the invasion and danger to wildlife, the disregard of the residents and their properties affected by excessive overbuilding, and the geological disruption that will harm this beautiful climate enhancing oak woodland and riparian habitat.

What We Have Learned…

FJC has learned through persistent inquiry into this proposed project, that the City of Redding approved the first phase of development for environmental studies, permits, materials, and contract management for this proposed project over the last 1+years.

Redding City Council also directed the West Rotary in conjuction with the California Conservation Crew “CCC”, to begin development of this proposed project in January 2023. The CCC has obtained a state funded grant of $850,000 for the sole purpose of developing and building this proposed ‘trail/road”, part of this funding will be for CCC labor.

IMPORTANT UPDATE…

We have recently learned from a presentation workshop at the Bike Depot, May 3rd, that this project is no longer in the original COR’s ATP Connector Trail planning, but has become a separate proposal with the Redding Parks. It is being reexamined and is being put out to public for input. They are looking to hear from the public to get a clearer idea if this project is wanted or not wanted.

We learned in February 2024, that the Rotary West wanted this project to change into “a 16-20-foot wide multi-use fire protection corridor ‘trail’ to eventually be paved and lighted”…

WHAT WE HAVE NOW LEARNED attending the COR’s recent workshop presentation at the Bike Depot on Friday, May 3rd, is:

This proposed trail project is now being reimagined by COR to become an 8-10 foot, gravel trail through the Jenny Creek Corridor. It would also have a connecting 80-foot walking bridge crossing over Jenny Creek at the most northern end of the Jenny Creek canyon corridor to connect with the Overhill trail and eventually connect with the Sacramento River Trail.

We are following this newest information with the new project manager at the Redding Parks and will update here on the website any other information we can gather for Friends of Jenny Creek.

Nevertheless, we still contend that there are already 215 miles of trails within a 15-mile radius of Redding for hiking, biking and walking. Therefore, we have many other beautiful trails that serve our community.

We are in favor of and enjoy healthy lifestyles through walking, hiking and biking and being outside in our city’s open spaces.

We are not favorable to an excessive overbuilding of this possible trail/road project.

We are not favorable to increased public access making our homes, families, the Greenbelt openspace, Habitat and Wildlife more vulnerable.

Friends of Jenny Creek residents are proud stewards of this open space and the natural environment this Greenbelt provides.

It is our goal as residents and stewards, to protect and preserve this natural, beautiful, peaceful, healthy habitat, and its human and wildlife inhabitants.

We are in favor of keeping this openspace in its natural state for Redding residents.

THE JENNY CREEK GREENBELT!

This photo was taken by our FJC Coordinator on a walk lead by the Shasta Environmental Association to discover the Jenny Creek Canyon in detail.

It was an outing to access how the canyon corridor could be disturbed by a possible trail cut through it by the City of Redding.

We were walking the greenbelt to get a better idea from the perspective of the many possible environmental disturbances to the habitat and wildlife .
